What Is Children's Dentistry?

Children's Dentistry is dental care designed specifically for kids' developing teeth and gums. It's about much more than check-ups — it includes prevention, early diagnosis, and family education to support good oral health from an early age. At Y3 Smiles Dental, we combine gentle treatments with guidance for parents to make dental visits stress-free and beneficial.

Why Children's Dentistry Matters

Comfort First

We focus on gentle care that builds confidence in young patients.

Preventative Focus

Services such as fluoride treatments, dental sealants, and routine cleanings help protect teeth.

Building Habits

We teach kids and families how to care for teeth every day.

Child-Friendly Care

Treatments are tailored to suit children's growth and development stages.

Affordable Access

Eligible families may be able to use the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS) to cover certain dental costs.

At Y3 Smiles Dental, we're dedicated to helping every child grow up with a strong, healthy smile.

Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS)

The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is a government programme that gives eligible children aged 0 to 17 access to up to $1,158 in dental benefits over a two-year period. To qualify, children generally need to be from families receiving certain income-tested government payments, including Family Tax Benefit Part A.

CDBS benefits cover a range of essential dental services including examinations, X-rays, cleaning, fillings, fissure sealants, and extractions. Orthodontic and cosmetic treatments are not covered under the scheme.

You can check your child's eligibility through myGov or by contacting Services Australia. Our reception team can also check eligibility at the time of booking.

Y3 Smiles Dental participates in the CDBS. Contact us to find out whether your child is eligible and to book their next appointment.

What to Expect at Your Child's First Dental Visit

A first dental visit is a gentle, welcoming introduction to the dental environment. Your child's dentist will carry out a gentle examination of the teeth and gums, talk to you about home care routines, and give your child a chance to become familiar with the dental chair and equipment at their own pace.

In line with Australian Dental Association guidance, we recommend that children have their first dental visit around the time their first tooth appears, or by their first birthday. Starting early helps build positive associations with dental care and makes future visits much easier.

Dental Care Tips by Age

0 to 2 years

Wipe your baby's gums with a clean cloth before teeth appear. When first teeth emerge, brush gently with a soft infant toothbrush and water. Avoid putting your baby to bed with a bottle of juice or milk, as this can lead to early childhood tooth decay.

3 to 6 years

Supervise brushing twice daily with a small, pea-sized amount of low-fluoride toothpaste. Book their first dental checkup if you haven't already. For children who are nervous about the dentist, our team takes a calm, friendly approach to help them feel at ease.

7 to 12 years

Permanent teeth begin to emerge during this time. Ask your dentist about fissure sealants to protect the deep grooves of back teeth from decay. If your child plays contact sports, a custom-fitted mouthguard provides much better protection than a store-bought option.
